What's New for 2019

The 2019 Hyundai Kona rolls into the new year as the top subcompact SUV on the road today thanks to several refinements and additions that have catapulted it to the top. For the new year, the Hyundai Kona's primary focus was on enhancing its safety features, and it undoubtedly succeeds.

Several Hyundai SmartSense technologies are now standard features on all trim levels, and they are Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keep Assist, and Driver Attention Warning. These new features take driver safety to the next level, better allowing owners to keep their minds on the things that matter.

The other notable addition to the Hyundai Kona for 2019 is the introduction of an all-electric model. The new electric model isn't just for show either as it was rated as a finalist for the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year.

A big reason behind the 2019 Hyundai Kona's ascent to the top of the subcompact SUV class was its performance. It's an agile little SUV that dominates every corner even with its standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and outputs 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet alongside a fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway with the front-wheel-drive model.

For Durham and Wake Forest drivers who stick with the gas-powered model, you have the option to upgrade to a potent turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that comes paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. At its zenith, this engine puts out power totals of 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque and a fuel economy of 28 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway with front-wheel-drive and 25 mpg city and 29 mpg highway for all-wheel-drive models.

The electric model meanwhile manages to clock at the highest power output alongside its superior fuel economy. With its 258-mile electric range and 132 MPGe city and 108 MPGe highway numbers, the all-electric Kona also gets 201 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque.

Standard Features and a Comfortably Intelligent Interior

The Hyundai Kona can sit up to five people at any given moment, and its standard upholstery is a fine cloth that comfortably conforms to the contours of your body. Its tech features are headlined by a seven-inch touchscreen, a pair of fast-charging USB ports, Bluetooth hands-free calling, a six-speaker stereo, and compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Behind the spacious rear seats, the Hyundai Kona comes with 19.2 cubic feet of cargo space which more than doubles to 45.8 cubic feet when you fold them down.

Trim Levels

The 2019 Hyundai Kona comes in four different trim levels, each of which offers an increasing number of features as you move up.

  • Hyundai Kona SE: The base trim level of the Hyundai Kona is the SE, and it comes standard with both the base engine and six-speed automatic transmission. Standard features include remote keyless entry, a rearview camera, a pair of fast-charging USB ports and a seven-inch touchscreen.
  • Hyundai Kona SEL: The second trim level of the Hyundai Kona includes everything the SE does but adds heated front seats, push-button start, proximity keyless entry, HD radio, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.
  • Hyundai Kona Limited: The Limited is the first trim level that brings the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine without having to upgrade, and it includes other features such as leather seats, automatic high beams, an eight-speaker premium audio system from Infinity, and full LED headlights.
  • Hyundai Kona Ultimate: The Ultimate, as you might imagine is the top-of-the-line Kona model, and it comes with everything in the previous trim levels but adds rain-sensing wipers, an eight-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, and wireless charging for Qi-enabled devices.
